Wood and sheet goods
SoftwoodPine, cedar, fir, spruce, and similar lower-density woods cut quickly but can splinter across the grain.
HardwoodOak, maple, walnut, beech, and similar woods need adequate gullet capacity, plate stiffness, and controlled feed.
PlywoodAlternating veneers resist splitting but exposed face veneers are easy to chip without the right tooth geometry and support.
MDFMDF cuts consistently but its dense fibers are abrasive and create fine dust that demands extraction and respiratory controls.
OSBOriented strand board is structurally useful but abrasive, resin-rich, and rarely a finish surface.

Plastics
AcrylicAcrylic is stiff and clear but cracks from vibration and melts when heat is not carried away by chips.
PolycarbonatePolycarbonate is tougher than acrylic but still softens with heat and can grab if the tooth geometry is too aggressive.
PVCPVC cuts easily but softens rapidly, so pitch, feed, and chip evacuation must prevent rubbing.
Metals
AluminumAluminum is soft enough to load teeth and aggressive enough to grab when geometry, clamping, lubricant, or feed are wrong.
CopperCopper is ductile and can smear or pinch the blade, especially in thin tubing.
BrassBrass machines cleanly but some alloys can self-feed with positive hook geometry.
Mild steelMild steel rewards several teeth in contact, rigid clamping, moderate speed, and a bi-metal or carbide edge suited to the section.
Stainless steelStainless work-hardens when a dull blade rubs. Use a durable edge, lower speed, firm feed, and appropriate cutting fluid where the machine permits.
Cast ironCast iron is hard, brittle, and abrasive. Carbide-grit or carbide-tooth blades are common for field cuts, with strong dust and chip controls.
Mineral products
Ceramic tileCeramic tile is not cut by conventional teeth. Small notches may use carbide or diamond grit, while long clean cuts usually belong on a tile-specific system.
Fiber cementFiber cement is extremely abrasive and can release respirable crystalline silica. PCD or purpose-built carbide and compliant dust control are essential.
